RC Metro Kalibo Hosts Free Legal Caravan for Persons Deprived of Liberty

On Dec. 12, 2024, approximately 200 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) participated in a free legal caravan organized by Project ALAC or Awareness Legal Aid Caravan by RLB & Associates and the Rotary Club of Metro Kalibo (D3850).

Project ALAC Founding Presidents Atty. Roni Barrios and IBP Aklan/Soroptimist of Kalibo speaker Atty. Flora Almero talked on the Rights of the Accused under the Rule of Law and Women's Rights under the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act (RA 9262), respectively. Rotary Club of Metro Kalibo Pres. Jess Fernandez and Soroptimist International Kalibo President Atty. Marion Merced-Pescasio also gave their message of support to Project ALAC advocacy.

We learned about their struggles, including the difficulty in accessing legal aid, delays in court hearings, and limited family visits due to circumstances beyond their control.

District 3850 Peace and Conflict Prevention Chair and Rotary-IEP Peace Ambassador Alumna 2021 PP Megs Lunn emphasized that Rotary promotes peace through service projects like ALAC. She believes that true peace can only be achieved when justice is accessible to all. President Jess also highlighted the Seven Areas of Focus and Rotary's global impact.

The club also signed an MOU for the donation of 250 copies of books (with 25 titles) to the BJMP Jail Library in Nalook, Kalibo, Aklan. The books will benefit the almost 200 inmates, including those enrolled in the Alternative Learning Center (ALS), as well as some undergraduates who need to refresh their literacy skills.

Special thanks to our partners, couple power Rotarians Leo and Femme Magno of Northwestern Training Center, Inc., BJMP Management, Soroptimist International Kalibo, JVC Review Center, IBP Aklan Chapter, and Project ALAC Volunteers.
