From Charcoal to Conservation: Growing a Greener Tomorrow

On March 23, 2025, the Rotaract Club of Cebu Fuente, in partnership with the PhilRes Mandaue City Chapter, Dulhugan People’s Association, BPI Cebu Loan Services and Recovery, DENR Region 7, 53rd Engineering Brigade, and Masterline Bakeshop, organized a tree-planting event in Barangay Buhisan, Cebu City.

The organizations involved shared a common goal: to help the environment recover from the challenges posed by ecosystem changes. One of the key partners, the Dulhugan People’s Association, is a local group that previously relied on charcoal production for their livelihood. Unfortunately, their charcoal production activities contributed to a forest fire in the area, causing significant environmental damage.

As a result of the fire, the association could no longer continue making charcoal. In partnership with DENR Region 7, they sought a new source of income—producing seedlings to help restore the forest. This sustainable solution not only supports the community but also contributes to the recovery of the environment.

The tree planting event began with a “Tree Planting 101” session led by Mr. Gale Mar Largo of the Dulhugan People’s Association. He shared valuable insights on the proper techniques for planting seedlings. The trees planted were Jackfruit seedlings, also known locally as Nangka, a fruit-bearing species that will further enrich the local ecosystem.

The journey to the tree planting site was challenging, with some parts of the trail difficult to navigate. However, the sense of teamwork among the participants was evident as everyone worked together to overcome the obstacles and complete the task.

The event concluded with expressions of gratitude from the leaders of the various organizations involved.

PhilRes Mandaue City Chapter President Don Jade Canama emphasized the importance of collective action: “Together, let’s plant the seeds of change and reap the benefits of a healthier, greener planet.”

This tree planting initiative was a small yet significant step towards building a sustainable future for both the environment and the community.
